         In the late 1990‘s Braldt stepped back from his career in illustration, turning his efforts toward producing a body of work in a strong, contemporary style. With an abiding love for the still life motif, Braldt’s main focus has been to create quietly strong presences of natural subjects in a contemporary realism style.
         We are now offering fine art reproductions for most of the work seen throughout the website, of Braldt's best work. They come in small editions of prints, signed & numbered by the artist. The prints, produced on canvas, metal, and archival paper, are ideal for contemporary settings in homes as well as in commercial and public venues.

         In the spring of 2011 Der Spiegel was doing a feature story about the upcoming Lent season, and asked Braldt to compose a still life with a simple Lenten meal of bread, water and fruit. Braldt was very pleased with the assignment, the painting turned out beautifully, and it was ready to run. But in the end the story and cover were pulled when a devastating 9.0 earthquake hit off the east coast of Japan on March 11, spawning a ferocious tsunami.
         The world was consumed by the constant news updates as reports on the aftermath from the largest earthquake in recorded history kept getting worse. Braldt didn’t expect to ever see his painting in print, but weeks later Der Spiegel did publish it as a cover, before the 40-day season of Lent had ended.

    On a visit to Holland in 2006 Braldt was able to spend hours at his native country’s museums in a way that he hadn’t in years. He came away hungry to paint. “I was humbled by how much there is yet to learn from the Old Masters, and I knew that my upcoming work would be in deference to these silent teachers.” In “Altarpiece Braldt gave homage to Hans Memling and Jan Van Eyck, two masters who painted altar pieces.

  • THE RED BOX
    Produced in 2006, oil on copper, 24"x24"
    (See also in AVAILABLE ORIGINALS portfolio.)

         While on a visit to his native Holland one year, Braldt visited a few antique shops in Amsterdam, where he purchased items that had been dredged up from the canals by scuba divers who were hired by the antique dealers. They would dive at night, when there was no boat traffic on the canals.
         The canal beds turned out to be a timeline of the city's human activity through the centuries. Up came things that were tossed into the water since Rembrandt's time. Soon enough these treasures began making appearances in Braldt's paintings. In "The Red Box" an old fork and a large rusted key have resurfaced into the light.

Still Lifes

In the late 1990‘s Braldt stepped back from his career in illustration, turning his efforts toward producing a body of work in a strong, contemporary style. With an abiding love for the still life motif, Braldt’s main focus has been to create quietly strong presences of natural subjects in a contemporary realism style.
     We are now offering fine art reproductions for most of the work seen throughout the website, of Braldt's best work. They come in small editions of prints, signed & numbered by the artist. The prints, produced on canvas, metal, and archival paper, are ideal for contemporary settings in homes as well as in commercial and public venues.
Besides the existing editions that are running, custom-sized orders are welcome.
