SEA BEGGARSOriginal produced in 1982; oil on panel, 14"x21"
In 1982 Alfred A. Knopf Inc. published Cecilia Holland’s factual novel about the Spanish conflict with The Netherlands during the Inquisition. Having just used Braldt’s illustration for “Mists of Avalon“, Knopf was familiar with Braldt's talent, style, and visual sensibilities toward certain periods in history.
The ‘voice’ in the story is a woman whose brother has gone to sea to fight the Spaniards. In one hand she patriotically supports the House of Orange, while the other hand holds her brother’s ship, the focus of her concern.
“Sea Beggars” won Braldt a Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators, as well as prestigious Awards of Excellence from American Illustration and from Communication Arts. This painting remains one of Braldt's personal favorites.

CRUCIFIXION OF EVOLUTIONOriginal produced in 1981; oil on panel, 14"x12"
In 1981 the public education controversy of teaching Creationism as opposed to Evolution was hitting the news. Mother Jones Magazine ran a feature story, using this image for the issue's cover. The magazine’s art director intended to convey that Darwin’s theory, as well as science, was being persecuted. Once published, the progressive magazine was barraged with letters of outrage for the volatile, evidently misconstrued image.
Following its publication with Mother Jones, this image won art director awards and a lot of attention. BBC picked up on it, using it for the opening image in a documentary covering the subject, which aired on PBS.

CALL GIRLOriginal produced in 1981; oil on panel, 14"x14"
In early 1981 Oui Magazine hired Braldt to illustrate a feature story titled “Anonymous Women”. They asked women from ordinary walks of life to talk about their more private daydreams. Working from the story’s title, Braldt chose to compose the women in the paintings in a faceless manner.
One woman let loose with her fantasy of talking with strangers on the phone while wearing sexy underpinnings. Braldt colored the telephone cord red to imply the ‘hot talk’ that was taking place.

CONDOROriginal produced in 1985 for "Atlantic Monthly" Magazine; oil on panel, 7"x10"
(See also in AVAILABLE ORIGINALS portfolio)
“Condor” was used in Atlantic Monthly’s same story about the plight of the Californian condors. These birds have the dubious honor of being considered one of Nature’s more homely creatures. For Braldt that attribute adds character.
“This might by one of the ugliest portraits I’ve done, but it was very attractive for me to paint. With the way I work, close up to the easel with a jeweler’s magnifier on my head, I came to appreciate its textural beauty from my zoomed-in vantage point.”

BRUCE LEEOriginal produced in 1988; oil on panel, 14"x12"
In 1988 Rolling Stone Magazine asked Braldt to paint a portrait of Bruce Lee to accompany a story they were doing on his noteworthy life, long after his untimely death in 1973. “Bruce Lee” needed to be straightforward and simple; and it had to capture the focussed directness of this remarkable individual’s life force. The strong red lines on Lee’s face, a trademark in his movies, speaks of Lee’s philosophically uncompromising approach to life in his martial art form as well his screen acting.

In 1982 the makers of Deluxe checks saw an angle of opportunity in offering their expertise to banks going through mergers or acquisitions, to ensure that the transition wouldn’t cost the banks their customers through inadequate servicing. Assets can float to the top with ease, if Deluxe is there to lighten the load. Braldt enjoyed this opportunity to pay tribute to one of his favorite painters, Rene Magritte.

SEX AND THE EGOOriginal produced in 2006; oil on panel, 16"x12"
In the late nineteenth century Viennese doctor Sigmund Freud rocked the medical world when he began an entirely new practice to become known as psychoanalysis. His theories on dreams, the ego, and our psychosexual natures were hotly debated, ridiculed, and soon enough were seriously taken.
As the field of psychology developed, Freud’s prominence receded. But in recent years his brilliance and innovative approaches to understanding the psychological makeup of humans enjoyed a resurgence of respect in professional circles. In 2006 Der Spiegel did a story on this reexamination of Freud, and asked Braldt to create a dignified portrait, with the assumption that Freud’s ego was a healthy one, and would tolerate the slight homage to his id.

LADY LIBERTYOriginal produced in 1986; oil on panel, 16"x12"
In 1982 President Reagan appointed Lee Iacocca to organize an effort within the private sector to join forces with the National Park Service in restoring the Statue of Liberty. The statue, which had endured over 100 years of onslaught by salty sea winds, rain, and beating sun, had weathered incredibly well over-all; in a century it had lost a mere 5/1000th of an inch of its surface. But the torch needed refurbishing and the inner structure of the statue needed work. In 1984 the restoration began, and Lady Liberty was shrouded for many months, until her completion in 1986. Braldt was commissioned by an insurance company to create a face portrait of the Statue of Liberty, to produce prints as commemorative gifts.

ADAM & EVE VS. DARWINOriginal produced in 1982; oil on panel, 16"x12"
In the nineteenth century, Charles Darwin ignited one of history’s more controversial philosophical arguments, Christianity’s tenet of creationism versus the scientific theory of evolution. Since then, our species’ origins have been hotly debated enough to make the headlines. In the early 1980s this smoldering issue flared up again, when parents took certain schools to court for touting the Christian Bible’s creation story to the exclusion of the evolution theory.
In 1982 Time Magazine commissioned Braldt to create a cover conveying this issue. Adam and Eve serenely gaze at each other beneath Eden’s tree of repute. Their slightly dismissive smiles are directed toward the disruptive ‘snake in the garden’ visage of Darwin, who stares confidently out at the viewer, armed with his own particular brand of knowledge. Other events took precedence over this story, and “Adam & Eve Versus Darwin” was never used as a Time cover. But the painting, as well as the debate, has a timeless quality. In 2005 Der Spiegel Magazine published yet another story on the subject and used the image as a cover.

WHY SHE SMILESOriginal produced in 1993; oil on panel, 18"x16"
In 1993 the Postal Service of Germany came out with an advertising campaign to promote a series of new packing cartons, (including string!), that could be purchased through the post offices. For one of the productions the project's art director contacted Braldt to recreate the Mona Lisa holding one of the cartons, with the title translating as “The Reason Why She Smiles”. At last Mona Lisa’s contented smile was explained, having found the perfect size box for whatever it was that she wanted to mail.

WHY HE NEVER CALLED BACKOriginal produced in 1981; oil on panel, 14"x18"
For "Oui" Magazine
In 1981 Oui Magazine asked Braldt to illustrate an article they were doing on the subject of the one-night stand. Before online dating services were around, singles bars had become a popular gathering place for unattached members of both sexes hoping to make a connection with someone of lasting interest. Other denizens had seen that venue as an opportunity to enjoy a pleasurable connection more fleeting in nature.
Braldt decided to reconfigure one of his favorite artist’s paintings to suit the project. In place of Rene Magritte’s locomotive engine steaming out of a fireplace in “La Duree Poignardee”, Braldt set a mute telephone in its stead. Like Magritte’s painting, there is incongruity in the situation. A clock faces the mirror, showing real time ticking away, not its reflection. And nothing else is happening in that ‘reality’ mirror.

STAR WARSOriginally produced in 1980; oil on panel, 16"x12"
In the old days, Time Magazine often contacted several different artists to produce an image for the same cover, and the editor would make the final choice. When the second Star Wars movie “The Empire Strikes Back” was coming out, Braldt was one of the artists contacted. Four days later he headed to Time’s headquarters with his small painting tucked under his arm. When Braldt entered the art director’s office it was vacant, except for a 60”x48” portrait of Darth Vader staring him in the face, from a sofa where it sat propped upright. Braldt immediately knew he had lost the cover to Darth’s portrayer, colleague and friend Marshall Arisman.
Time Magazine customarily buys the originals to their published covers. Since Braldt’s “Star Wars” wasn’t chosen, he got to keep the original. Years later the small original was put up on eBay for auction. A new sort of Star Wars began when within an hour of posting, three serious contenders had stepped into the bidding fray.

“Sardines” is one of Braldt’s favorite illustration pieces, because of the little painting’s simplicity and pleasing design. Although he can't recall the specifics of this particular assignment, the concept had to do with being packed in like a can of sardines.

King Arthur’s legend, told through the eyes of the four important women in his life, was an instant cult classic.

RED EARTH AND FALLING RAINOriginal produced in 1994, oil on panel, 16”x16”
In 1994 the Little Brown Publishing asked Braldt to paint the cover for Vikram Chandra’s first novel, “Red Earth and Pouring Rain”, an epic tale written in the storytelling tradition of “A Thousand and One Nights”. The novel straddles continents and centuries in its convoluted tale. It all begins with a modern-day monkey recovering from a blow to his head, which apparently jarred his psyche back into a previous lifetime, one in which he was an erudite human. A nearby typewriter enables him to explain his situation to his astonished rescuers.

TASTES FROM A DIFFERENT WORLDOriginal produced in 1986; oil on panel, 22"x16"
In 1986 Bols, a Dutch liquor manufacturer, wanted to introduce their new product line to the USA. Bols wanted a single ad instead of a costly series of ads, to promote their twelve new apertifs. Wishing to avoid the visual overload of picturing all the liqueurs, Braldt took a more suggestive approach.
He gathered the fruit flavor sources, the ‘essence’ of each liqueur, into one bottle. An old European background sets off the subject while a bird tows his cargo along the indicated path. Fantastic new products come along, yet Bols’ quality is ever the same--“semper idem”.

DECAY ON JOHNSON STREETOriginal produced in 2011; oil on panel, 30"x40"
(See also in AVAILABLE ORIGINALS portfolio.)
When Braldt was invited to submit a painting to a Valentine's Day group show titled "Decadence" his mind referred back to its root word 'decay', with its more natural connotation. While turning this in his mind, Braldt found himself walking down an old eroded tar street in Santa Fe with eyes cast down, and he recognized a beautiful aging process going on at his feet.

HOME ON THE RANGEOriginal produced in 1986; oil on panel, 14"x17"
In 1986 Texas Monthly magazine contacted different artists to create their interpretations of famous cowboy songs. Braldt was assigned to the venerable “Home on the Range”. As a European, Braldt already had a romanticized version of life out in the Wild West. Dutch children grew up watching the same cowboy TV shows as did kids in the USA. Cowboy song classics were aired, and children’s imaginations were filled with the images conjured up.
As a youngster Braldt had envisioned the wide open range dotted with campfires on starry nights; cowboys sat around in camaraderie eating beans and playing cards, while the cattle in their keep grazed close by. Antelope played, coyotes howled, and buffalo roamed. Braldt pulled from those childhood visions to create “Home on the Range”, using the Stetson hat to signify the spirit of the American Cowboy’s presence. He added the light beams to the night landscape as guardian angels protecting the beleaguered buffalo.

FROZEN COMFORTOriginal produced in 1984; oil on panel, 14"x14"
(Original painting is available for purchase. Framed piece measures 26"x26".)
In 1984 Rolling Stone Magazine contacted Braldt for an illustration to go with a fiction piece they were running. Although the story had a different title, Braldt gave his painting the title “Frozen Comfort”. The main character, who belongs to the Peace Corps, has just returned from a long stint in Africa, where she’d become homesick for the United States.
But much has changed in the world to which she returns. Computers have arrived, coke comes in cans instead of bottles, life has picked up its pace in a way that leaves her feeling alienated and out of touch. Immobilized by an indefinable malaise, she rocks her time away on the front porch, dreaming of Africa with its more measured, comprehensible rhythm. Braldt recalls, “Once, when I was giving a talk to a children’s third grade class, I asked them what this painting meant to them. One youngster piped up, ‘If you try to rock in sand, you don’t get anywhere!’ He got it!”
