STONE LIFES | 33 Images
In late 1998 Braldt was invited to join the prestigious Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The gallery director asked to visit his studio, was impressed with the body of work he was painting, and offered him a solo show as an introduction to the gallery.
In February 1999 Braldt’s show “Stone Lifes” , with 24 contemporary still life portraitures of stones, was a wonderful success. People who knew of Braldt’s older work through his stellar illustration career in Manhattan, came out in throngs. At that point “Stone Lifes” was the most attended opening that Gerald Peters Gallery had experienced.

“I’ve always been interested in still life, and having been an illustrator for such a long time, I really wanted to try something different. Like a lot of people, I pick up stones when I’m out walking, and I’m intrigued by the idea that they’ve been around for millions of years. To get these shapes, to get so smooth, each stone has really had a life. Eons of stillness.” Stones continue to make quiet appearances in Braldt’s paintings.
