  • COUNTING SHEEP
Original produced in 1986 for Control Data Corporation; oil on panel, 17"x16"
(See also in AVAILABLE ORIGINALS portfolio)

One of the great joys for Braldt during his illustration career was the many opportunities he had to paint animals. His library remains filled with beautiful reference books of the animal world. This portfolio is filled examples of the pleasure he had with those assignments.

Back in 1980s Control Data was a pioneer corporation in the computer industry. In 1986 Braldt was hired to illustrate a series of ads to be used in one of the industry’s trade magazines. The three ads used old sayings in their messages. Braldt assumed he was meant to portray the sheep that were counted upon as an insomnia remedy. Those sheep on the hill have a relaxing presence at first glance, but if one is trying to fall asleep by counting them, the math might keep one awake. The number of legs does not equate with the sheeps' headcount.
Once the ad came out with its copy, Braldt realized Control Data’s message was encouraging buyers not to be led around like sheep to purchase another product! Fortunately both adages fit the image.

  • DINOSAURS
Original produced circa 1985; oil on panel, 10"x18"

Originally designed for a courier service located in Texas, Braldt’s “Dinosaurs” was eventually shown in the annual illustration issue of Communication Art Magazine. When the ad agency for the Minneapolis Planetarium saw the image in that publication, they contacted Braldt to use “Dinosaurs” for their upcoming show on these prehistoric creatures.
With the heading, “Come See What the World Was Like When Your Parents Were Young”, visitors viewed “Dinosaurs” as an impressive diorama within the planetarium. “Dinosaurs” also appeared on the Minnesota landscape in the form of a large billboard. “As it turned out, I was in Minneapolis to judge an illustration show when the billboard was up. As we drove in from the airport, there it was in a 64 foot long format! And to think that those guys still weren’t even life size!”

  • PECCARY
Original produced in 1985; oil on panel, 10"x20"

In 1985 the Pirelli tire company wanted to produce a calendar with twelve images denoting animals that one might see roaming the landscapes of Brazil, where some of Pirelli’s tire manufacturing was headquartered. Braldt created six of the images used. After researching the peccary, Braldt decided to approach this short-tempered little powerhouse from a surreal perspective. He’s not gone hog-wild yet, but some latent aggression is seeping through.
A year after the publication of the calendar, this image was chosen by the Art Directors Club of Minnesota for their annual poster, and was subsequently awarded a Gold Medal by them, as well as by the New York Art Directors Club.

  • GORGEOUS VII
Original produced in 1982; oil on panel, 7"x5"

In 1982 the Dutch magazine Libelle commissioned Braldt and eleven other artists to create twelve miniature cat portraits for their upcoming calendar. Braldt looked to Hans Holbein’s portraiture of nobility for inspiration. “Gorgeous VII” looks as if he should be hanging in the great dining hall of some noble family’s estate.
There he could peer out at his thoroughbred Blue Point progeny as they dine on one of the estate’s fowl, a bird whose lineage probably reached back to the hen just finished by Gorgeous.

  • RAINBOW WHISKERS
Original produced in 1981; oil on panel; 20"x16"

In 1981 Graphis, a world-renowned design trade magazine at the time, did a feature story on Braldt’s work. Consequently, they invited him to design that issue’s cover. Braldt took the opportunity to pay homage to his cats, Droop, Doortje and Kaatje, who had made the journey from Holland to America with Braldt.
In 1983 the American Lung Association contacted Braldt, asking to use the image on their poster, which called attention to the hazards of second hand smoke to animals as well as humans.

  • POLAR BEARS
Original produced in 1991, oil on panel, 18"x14"

In 1989 the St. Louis Zoo began commissioning paintings from Braldt for publicity of their biennial fundraising event called Zoofari, where formal dress was expected. Posters depicting the zoo’s newcomers were produced to commemorate each event, and they wanted them dressed for the occasion as well. Hence the bow ties.
Eventually this image won a gold medal with The Society of Illustrators, and appeared in their 34th annual. Braldt got a lot of calls from fellow illustrators, congratulating him on getting the Coca Cola advertising campaign! Because of a striking resemblance, they had assumed Braldt was the creator of the famous animated cola-consuming denizens of the arctic. (For the record, Braldt’s bears made their debut in St. Louis a few years before their more famous cousins made an entrance on TV.)

  • COYOTE
Original produced in 1992; oil on canvas, 20"x24"
(See also in AVAILABLE ORIGINALS portfolio.)

    “Coyote”
In the late 1992 Playboy ran a fiction story that addressed a still-controversial issue in the West, the tacit sanction of killing coyotes and wolves. Myth and misinformation abound about the threat that these wild, basically non-aggressive canines present to the keepers of domestic herds. In the story coyotes were just being killed at a certain time of the year. Apparently they were only considered a threat during the winter, once they’d grown in their beautiful - and desirable - winter coats.

  • HORNED TOAD
Original produced in 1982; oil on panel, 10"x10"

    “GO TEAM!”
In 1982 the Bartels & Carstens Agency created an campaign for Anheuser Busch Corporation, a supporter of collegiate sports. They chose Braldt to produce the art for a line of mascot-themed football schedule posters.
Braldt didn’t grow up in the United States; where he came from a football game meant soccer. But he has always enjoyed painting animals - especially ones with attitude - and he had a lot of fun with these.
Braldt’s favorite assignment was to paint the Horned Toad of Texas Christian University. He was requested to give the mascots aggressive stances expected of football players. He decided to give this little creature the fire-breathing capabilities of his mythical distant relative, the dragon. His job was to light a fire under TCU’s fans, inspiring them to drive their team on to victory.

“Koalas” was the last painting Braldt did for the St. Louis Zoo’s fund-raising event, Zoofari. (Please go to "Polar Bears" in this portfolio for the full story.)
Braldt was pleased to have the opportunity to paint such visually endearing animals, he took the shyness of these creatures into consideration for their portraiture. While still honoring the black-tie dress tradition given to all the zoo's new guests of honor, Braldt gave these modest newcomers’ bow ties a subtler treatment.

  • KOENIJN
Original produced in 1984; oil on panel, 16"x20"

In 1984 Henkes Senefelder, one of the largest printers in Holland, contacted Braldt to do a portrait of an unusual animal for part of a six-ad campaign that was published in trade magazines for the printing industry. Braldt was asked to create a creature that had a head of a rabbit, and the body of a cow. The Dutch word for rabbit is konijn, and the word for cow is koe. Thus was born the koenijn.
